MAGNIFICENT MINIBEASTS!
Reading
Please continue to read at least 3 times a week. The Bugclub books will help you practise all of your taught phonic sounds, but you can also read your own books, comics, children's newspapers etc.
Remember, "The more that you read, the more that you know, the more that you learn, the more places you go!" (Dr Seuss)
Numeracy
This week in numeracy we are going to revise some of our knowledge around 2D and 3D shapes.
Literacy
This week we are going to look at how we can use alliteration and expanded noun phrases to create poetry.
What is alliteration? Have a look through the power point below. Alliteration is fun! Have a look around your garden and see if you can use alliteration to describe things.
Topic: Science
Watch the video and say when you think it is summer. Pause the video and, with your adult, explain why you think it is summer and the changes you noticed as spring turns to summer.
Go through the information on the Lesson Presentation and discuss some of the changes which happen in summer.
Literacy
Write a list of 5 different minibeasts. Can you use alliteration of describe what they are doing, how they are feeling or how they look?
Here are 2 of mine:
Little, lovely ladybird lazing on the leaf!
Wriggly, wrinkly worm wondering what’s for tea.
Topic: Science
Look at the table, what do you notice about the average number of hours of daylight during the summer? How many hours of daylight there are in summer? How do these compare with the number of hours of daylight in the spring? If the days in the summer are longer what happens to the nights. What happens to the nights in summer?
Complete the Changes Around Us Activity Sheet for summer.
Literacy
Look at your alliteration sentences from yesterday. Below are some lined minibeasts sheets. Can you write up your sentences on the corresponding minibeast? Remember to use correct letter formation (videos of letter formation are on the Coxley Blog page), capital letters, full stop and finger spaces!
Topic: Science/ Art
Paint a picture of a tree. Can you paint it so half of the tree shows what it will look like in summer and the other half in autumn? How does this painting compare to the previous painting of a half winter, half spring tree?
Literacy
Over the next two days we are going to have a go at using expanded noun phrases and alliteration to complete an acrostic poem about a minibeasts. An acrostic poem is where the first letter from each line spells out a word.
Choose one of the minibeasts from below and see, with the support of your adult, if you can write a short poem using alliteration and expanded noun phrases to make your writing more interesting. They can be nonsense if you like!
Here is mine:
B eautiful, baby butterfly
U nder an umbrella
T erribly ticklish,
T otally tremendous
E ating everything
R eally red
F lying fast and free
Yelling YIPPEE!!
L anding on a long, limp leaf
Topic: Science/ DT
Can you create summer in a bottle by collecting small objects which you associate with summer (such as seashells and pieces of yellow paper to represent the sun) in a small (washed) transparent drinks bottle? See the Seasons Discovery Bottles Adult Guidance Sheet for more ideas.
Numeracy
Start to work through the allocated shape tasks on Mathletics. There are quite a few to do. Try challenging yourself. Find an area of shape that you find tricky and complete this task with your adults help. Remember, practice makes perfect.
Literacy
Continue to work on your acrostic poem. Can you write it up in best? Why not video call a friend and read it to them.
Topic: PE
Have a look at this Let’s Move website from the BBC. This link will take you to three different story/ dance activities where you have to move like a minibeast!

Literacy
This week we are going to have a focus on grammar.
Watch the videos below which explain how we can make our writing more descriptive using expanded noun phrases.
Following this, use the sheets below to practise writing expanded noun phrases to describe Dave the Troll and his cave.
Numeracy
This week, for numeracy, we are going to try something a little different. White Rose is a fantastic website and currently has videos to support with the teaching of numeracy skills in the same way we would teach them in school. Today, have a look through the first video with your adult. Have a pen and paper ready as you will be asked to pause the video and work out some answers. These videos will hopefully support both you and your adult in your understanding of early multiplication. Let me know what you think of these videos and if you find them useful.
Complete Lesson 1- Unit Fractions
Topic: Science
Spring: With your adult, discuss your experiences of spring. Use these questions to support your thinking.
Spring Photos: Look at the Spring Photos and discuss them. What conditions the plants would need to grow and flower. Can you describe what the weather is usually like in spring?
Tuesday 9th June
Literacy
Continue to practise using expanded noun phrases to make your writing more accurately descriptive.
Use the expanded noun phrase support mat to help you if you need it.

Our Weather Station: Remind children of the weather station they built during the previous Autumn and Winter unit. Can they remember what it is measuring and how? Remind children of the tools being used to measure the weather and the units they use ( the rain gauge measures the rainfall in mm, we made small flags from lolly sticks and a small cutting of material and a compass app we downloaded on the iPads to find the wind direction, and a thermometer to measure the temperature).
Weather Report: Use the Weather Report Activity Sheet to record the weather for today. (Monitor the weather for the rest of that week using the weather station and record on the weather chart each day). Use the Weather Symbols Prompt Sheet to remind children of the weather symbols if needed. Are children able to make observations about the weather?
Children use the writing frame and word bank to support.
If you don’t have access to a thermometer, we will take the temperatures at school and record them on here.
Wednesday 10th June
Literacy
Draw a picture of your own made-up story character. Try to add as much detail as you can. Colour your picture as well but DO NOT LET YOUR ADULT SEE IT! Around your character, write some expanded noun phrases to describe them is as much detail as possible but DO NOT LET YOUR ADULT THEM!
Give your adult something to draw on and with and some colouring pencils. Read your expanded noun phrases to your adult. When you have finished, get your adult to draw a picture of how they see the character you have described in their mind. When they have finished, compare your drawing of your characters to your adults. How similar are they? Which parts look the same? Is this because of a more accurate and detailed expanded noun phrase? Were any parts of your adult’s character completely different to yours? Could you add or change any expanded noun phrases to make your description more specific?
I would love to see some photos of this. Just email them to the school office!

Friday is challenge day on Bitesize Daily!
BBC Bitesize have partnered with White Rose Maths to create a series of challenges to test your problem-solving skills. Each one gets a bit more difficult, so see how many you and your family can do together!
(If you are yet to explore the BBC Bitesize website, now is the time to do it. On the red button and on the webpage, you'll find daily lessons for home schooling in Maths and English, as well as regular lessons in Science, History, Geography and more.)
Literacy/ Reading
This week we are going to focus on our reading skills. Hopefully you have continued to read regularly at home. Unfortunately, we are not able to send home new reading books at the moment but you all have plenty of books available on Bugclub. The books on Bugclub are really great fun. As I'm sure you already know, if you find a bug and click on it, it will ask you a question about the book. When you finish reading the book you will be rewarded with coins for every bug question you answered correctly. You can then spend these coins in the My Rewards tab. You can enter the pitstop, buy and improve the performance of a car, and then take it for a spin on the race track; buy stickers and then search for the correct page to stick them in a colourful sticker book (do the stickers remind you of any books you may have read?); enter the Skate Shake to buy and customise your own skateboards, scooters and bikes before hitting the skatepark; play a variety of cool games in the game zone (my personal favourite being Jelly Zapper!); or buy items to create an amazing treehouse!
How many books do you think you can read this week? Set yourself a target and see if you can reach it. I will be able to see the books you have read and how many questions you have answered, so if you run out of books I can allocate you lots more and maybe even move you up a level!
Numeracy
These questions will continue to build on your understanding of a third. When completing these questions consider these points:
How many objects make a whole?
Can we split the whole amount into 3 equal groups?
What is a third of ___?
What is staying the same? What is changing?
How does changing the whole amount change the answer?
Is the answer still worth a third? Explain why?
Topic: Science
Our topic work for this week is going to focus on Science.
After Christmas, we spent a very fun week going on walks and looking for signs of autumn and winter. We are now going to have a look at the changes that take place as winter turns to spring, before, next week, exploring all of the changes that happen in spring and summer .
Write down the names of the 4 seasons. Can you remember which months of the year are in which seasons? Have a look at the link below for help.
Draw a picture of an annual event that happens in each of these seasons.
Tuesday 2nd June
Literacy/ Reading
How much did you manage to read a book yesterday? Don't worry if you didn't finish it. Some of you are reading very long books that would be impossible to finish in one day but reading a few pages/ a chapter a day is a good habit to get in to. How much can you read today?
When you finish a book, complete the book review below to tell people what you thought of it and to show your understanding of the story.
Numeracy
Have a go at completing these reasoning and problem solving questions. There are explanations/ the answers in red to the right of each question for your adults.

Wednesday 3rd June
Literacy/ Reading
How many coins have you managed to earn so far? Have you spent any yet? You can always read lots of books and save up your coins for a bigger and better reward. As you work up through the reading levels the books have more coins available to win and so it becomes easier to save up large amounts.
Numeracy
Now that you are hopefully becoming more familiar with quarters, halves and thirds, we are going to look at more complex fractions and mathematical vocabulary relating to fractions. The sheet below introduces unit fractions. This is not something you will have covered before. It also introduces the word denominator which is the vocabulary used to represent the number of parts that a shape or quantity is split into.
Remember, use anything available to you in your house as concrete resources to support in finding fractions e.g. lego blocks, pencils, teddies, buttons etc.
Topic: Science
Go through the information on the Lesson Presentation below and discuss some of the changes which happen in the spring.
Day Length: Look at the table. What do you notice about the average number of hours of daylight during the spring? Can you tell how many hours of daylight there are in spring? How do these compare with the numbers of hours of daylight in the winter? If the days in the spring are longer then what happens to the nights?Thursday 4th June
Literacy/ Reading
Did you discover any new vocabulary in the books you have read? Can you remember the word and what it meant? Have a go at using it in a sentence?

Worm's Eye View
Did you know, worms don't have eyes! They can only sense light and dark so they know if they are above ground or below ground.
But what would life look like if they did? In school we often talk about things from a bird's eye view- where we look at objects from above. Today though, I'd like you to look at things from a worm's eye view. Maybe look up at a chair, or if the weather is good, a tree. Do you notice how the bottom of the object, the part that is closer to you, seems much bigger than the top. Can you take 5 photos from a worm's eye view- looking up at different objects? Do they look strange to you? Talk about these pictures with your family.
Can you draw a picture. lying on the floor and looking up? Can you make the parts nearest to you bigger than the parts further away?
Have lots of fun and I would love to see some pictures/ photos. Just send them to the school email address.

As we all know, these are unusual times that children in the future will learn about in their history lessons. This week we are going to keep a diary so you can look back on this week in years to come.
Use the attachment below that includes some helpful hints when writing a diary entry.
Things to remember: Say the sentence you want to write before you write it. Remember to use the phonics help mat to help you sound out words and your common exception word mat to copy tricky spellings from. Take care with your handwriting and letter formation, remembering your talls and tails. Make sure your capital letters and full stops are in the correct places. Try to use adventurous vocabulary.
